Overview
ITS offers several storage solutions for different use cases. This article identifies the high-level features of each to help you determine which solution best meets your needs.
Microsoft OneDrive
Future direction personal, team, and departmental disk service is a secure, highly available enterprise-scale data "storage" solution available to departments and individual faculty, students, and staff.
Individuals
- All Outlook email users are provisioned with 1 TB storage capacity. This is known as your OneDrive. Documents are Private unless designated to be shared.
Teams and departments
- SharePoint and Teams site folders support up to 25 TB. Your OneDrive client is able to connect to these drives as well, with permission based availability.

Austin Disk Services
Austin Disk Services is a secure, highly available enterprise-scale file server solution available to departments and individual faculty, students, and staff.
Features
- Connectivity via SMB with encryption for data in transit.
- Connectivity via WebDAV and SFTP on all operating systems
- Approved for storage of confidential data
- Windows file server solution employing Active Directory-based permissions
- Automatic backups with end-user recovery available
Cost
$1.40/GB per year. Data usage is billed monthly at the annual rate divided by 12.

UTBox
UTBox is a campus-wide cloud storage solution that allows faculty, staff, and students at the University of Texas at Austin to use Box cloud-based file sharing for business and academic purposes.
Features
- Accessible via Box Sync (Windows/Mac OS X) or web browser (all operating systems)
- Approved for storage of Confidential data
- Cloud storage solution
- Collaboration options available for University and non-University individuals
- Individual storage: 2 TB for faculty and staff, 150 GB for students
- Departmental storage: Unlimited

Recommended Uses
- Upload files via a web browser and quickly collaborate with users across campus or outside the University

Virtual Servers (UT-VMG)
UT Virtual Machine Gateway (UT-VMG) provides cost-effective, reliable, self-provisioned Virtual Machines (VM) based on the VMware vSphere Virtual Infrastructure suite and Aria Automation product. UT-VMG is intended to serve departments, colleges, and research units at The University of Texas at Austin.
Features
- Virtual server based on the VMware vSphere infrastructure
- Infrastructure housed in the University Data Center (UDC)
- Customers retain responsibility for system administration of UT-V VMs
- Storage: Tier 1 and Tier 2 storage available in 1 GB increments
Cost
$1.20/GB per year (Tier 1) or $0.40/GB per year (Tier 2), $0.40/GB per year (Backups - sum of provisioned Tier 1 and Tier 2), plus cost of compute (vCPU /memory).
Recommended Uses
- Storage for departments where retaining responsibility for server administration is appropriate or required
