  • Plugins extend the base functionality of WordPress. They can be used to track statistics, create a rotating image gallery, and more.

  • Widgets are used to add data to your blog. Depending on the theme you are using, widgets appear in your blog's sidebar, homepage, header and footer areas. Widgets display information that can be pulled from your blog or from other sources, including social websites like DeliciousFacebook, and more.

Several plugins and widgets are available for use on your blog. You must be using a theme that supports widgets.

Activating a Plugin

Please visit our Plugin Resource Page for a list of plugins that are available. For plugins marked "Available Upon Request," email to ask that they be enabled.

  1. Log in to your WordPress blog and click the Plugins link on the left.

  2. Click the Activate link for the plugin you want to activate. If you want to activate multiple plugins, select Activate from the Bulk Actions pull-down menu, and click the checkboxes by each plugin you want to activate.

  3. Once you have made your selection(s), click the Apply button.

Using Widgets

  1. Log in and click the Appearance link on the left.

Tip: If you see only icons in the left navigation menu, click the arrow at the bottom of the menu to expand your options.

  2. Click Widgets.

  3. Drag the widget you want to the sidebar on the right.

  4. Click the Save button.

To enable a widget, click and drag it to the desired position in the sidebar. Click on the dropdown menu on the right side of the widget to access the widget settings.

Only the plugins, widgets, and themes that are currently available can be used, as new plugins and themes cannot be uploaded or installed on a per-user basis. If you believe that an existing plugin, widget, or theme needs to be updated, please let the University Blog Service (UBS) administrators know.
