Wireless Networks (Wi-Fi)

ITS provides the campus community, including students, faculty, staff, official visitors, and affiliated workers with wireless access to the university's network, UTnet, as well as to the Internet. Wireless connectivity is available in most campus buildings.

 

ITS has also negotiated an arrangement with AT&T to provide Wi-Fi access for visitors on campus. Visitors may use a credit card to purchase service, similar to other commercial venues (e.g. Wi-Fi hotspots), some conference may provide codes for usage.

 

All users must abide by the university's Acceptable Use Policy

  • Wi-Fi Access for UT Students, Faculty, Staff

    The utexas Wi-Fi network provides access to UT Austin students, faculty, staff, official visitors, and certain affiliated workers. Access to the utexas Wi-Fi network requires a UT EID with the proper affiliations or entitlements.

    All users have a default data allocation based on their affiliation with the University. Optional upgraded data plans can be purchased to supplement the default allocations.

    Devices connecting to the utexas Wi-Fi network must be compatible with of 802.11a/g/n/ac and capable of 802.1x authentication (also commonly referred to as "WPA2-Enterprise" on several platforms). Devices that do not support 802.1x will be unable to use the university's Wi-Fi network. Older Wi-Fi devices that only support 802.11b will be unable to use the university's Wi-Fi network.

    A basic data plan is provided as a Common Good based on the individual's affiliations with the university.

    Optional data plans can be purchased by individuals if their needs exceed the default allocation. See Personal Network Access (PNA).

    Technical support is available during university business hours - typically M-F 8:00am to 5:00pm (excluding university holidays). 

    Routine requests are typically addressed within one business day. UT Service Desk staff may escalate requests as needed.

    Service Availability

    The utexas Wi-Fi service has an availability SLA of 99.9% for the core system.

    Individual access points / coverage locations do not have a set SLA and are handled on an as-available basis.  Coverage decisions are funded and made by individual departments.

     

    Maintenance and Incident Communications

    ITS will follow established maintenance and change management processes for this service.

    ITS will follow established incident communications processes for unplanned outages for this service.

     

  • Wi-Fi Access for Visitors

    The university has negotiated with AT&T to provide Wi-Fi access for visitors on campus. Visitors may use a credit card to purchase service similar to other commercial venues (AT&T may not charge some of its existing customers). Visitors simply select the attwifi network on their device, open their web browser, and follow the instructions.  Some conferences may provide codes to use the service.

    This service is not intended and has insufficient capacity to be used by students, faculty, staff or official visitors. Those groups should utilize the university's utexas wireless network.

  • Sponsored Visitor Network Access

    Departments can sponsor access for visitors using a few different mechanisms. ITS does not create or sponsor guest accounts for department visitors.

     

    Sponsoring Guests on attwifi

    Coupons and codes may not be used by UT Austin faculty, students, or staff.

    Departments may purchase coupons from the Campus Computer Store using a ProCard or purchase order to grant visitors (e.g., conference attendees, guest lecturers, and others) access to the attwifi Wi-Fi network. Pricing is available only through the Campus Computer Store.

    Printed coupons provide unique individual codes, are valid for 24-hours from the time of redemption, and may be used on up to three devices. Printed coupons can be purchased in quantity in advance of expected visitors, so they are readily available for the department staff to distribute. Unused printed coupons expire after one year.

    Conference codes are shared codes that are available for groups visiting campus for a limited time (less than 1 week duration). To obtain a quote, departments must provide the Campus Computer Store with the number of devices they wish to connect and the dates of the conference. 

     

    Sponsoring Affiliated Workers

    Longer term visitors who require regular access to the network (e.g., visiting researchers on campus for a semester, or long term contractors) will need an Affiliated Worker account to access the utexas Wi-Fi network.

    Visitors in this role will need to create a UT EID if they do not already have one. Once the EID has been created, administrative staff from the sponsoring department will need to assign the correct affiliations and entitlements in the EID system.     Sponsoring Guests on utexas

    In limited circumstances a department TSC may sponsor a guest ID to use on the utexas Wi-Fi network. The sponsoring department incurs liability for the guest's activity while on the utexas network and is solely responsible for end-user support for the guest's devices. Guest IDs created in this manner only function on the utexas Wi-Fi and will not grant access to any other services requiring a UT EID.

    Departments should consult with their Technical Support Contact (TSC) to seek sponsorship assistance.

     

    eduroam

    The University of Texas at Austin currently does not support eduroam due to security, technical, and policy concerns.

    • Creates security vulnerabilities (exposes UT EID credentials to attack)
    • Does not identify the end users, so the University could be liable for their actions
    • Conflicting policies with the University regarding managing bandwidth resources
