Creating or Recovering a Personal Google Account

 

1. Check if You Already Have a Personal Google Account

1. If you're not sure you've signed up for any Google products, you can check by visiting the Google Accounts recovery page. 
 

2. Enter the phone number or the recovery email address for the account, then click Next.

3. Enter the full name associated with your account, then click Next.

4. If Google does not recognize the information, you'll immediately see a “No account found” message.

5. You can click Try again to enter different information, or you can sign up for a new account instead. To sign up for a new account, follow the instructions in Section 1.2. 

 

2. Create a Personal Google Account

1. Go to https://accounts.google.com/SignUp. Follow the directions and enter the required information and click Next.

2. Enter your phone number and click Next. Google will send a verification code to your phone that you will use to complete the sign-up process. 
 
 
 

3. Enter the verification code sent to your phone and click Verify. 
 
 
 

4. The personal information page will appear. Follow the directions and enter your information, including your birth date and gender, then click Next. 
 
 
 

5. Review Google's Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, then click I agree. 
 
 
 

6. Your account will be created.

Transferring Google Data and Personal Account Storage

 

1. Sign in to Your Google Account

1. Go to www.google.com. 
 

2. Locate and click on the Sign in button in the top-right corner of the page. 
 
 
 

3. Enter your email address and click Next.  
 
 
 

4. Enter your email account password and click Next. 
 
 
 

5. Optional: If you have Google 2-Step Verification set up on your account, Google may require you to select a verification method and then enter a verification code. If necessary, select the verification method of your choice, and enter the verification code in the 2-Step Verification window if required. Click Next to complete the login process.  
 
 

 

6. You will be logged in to your Google Account.

 

2. Add Storage to a Personal Google Account

Before you begin to migrate your files and email, check how much storage you have available in your personal Google Account and compare that to how much you have in your UTmail account.

If you do not have enough storage in your personal Google Account to hold all your UTmail email and Drive files, you can add storage to the 15 GB standard storage plan. For more information about Google Storage plans for your personal account, please visit https://one.google.com/about/plans.

 

3. Transfer Files from Your Personal UTmail Account to a Personal Google Account

1. Go to Manage your Google Account and sign in with your UTmail account.   
 

2. Find the Transfer your content section on the landing page or under the Data & Privacy section and click Start transfer. This will take you to Google’s Takeout page, https://takeout.google.com/. 
 
 
 

3. Enter the email address for the personal Google Account, e.g., yourname@gmail.com, that will receive your UTmail content, then click SEND CODE. This will send an email to your personal email for verification.  
 
Note: If you don’t already have a personal Google Account, you can create one by clicking the Create account link. View account creation instructions in Section 1 of this document. 
 
 
 

4. Sign in to your personal Google Account Inbox and check your mail.  
 

5. Find and open the Verify your account email message, then click on Get confirmation code in the body of the message.  
 

6. A Confirm your transfer window will open. Copy the confirmation code displayed.  
 

7. Return to the Transfer your content window for your UTmail account, enter the confirmation code, then click VERIFY to continue. 
 
 
 

8. Under the Select content to copy and transfer section, choose the content you’d like to copy by toggling the options for Drive and Gmail on or off, then click START TRANSFER to begin the process.  
 
Note: All Drive files that you own and all Gmail, including Sent and Archived messages, will be included in the transfer.  
 
 
 

9. You will receive a notification that the copy and transfer is in progress and that it may take up to a week to complete the transfer. You will receive an email when the transfer is complete.

10. Note: Transferring your data does not delete it from Google's servers. If you want to continue using your UTmail account, you will need to sign back in after the transfer is complete and delete all of your Drive files and any email necessary to ensure your UTmail account is under the 1 GB quota.

Forwarding Email from a Personal UTmail Account

This section is designed to help you set up automatic forwarding from your UTmail account to your personal Google account. There are a few things to consider before setting up automatic forwarding: 

  • You can only forward messages for a single Gmail address, and not an email group or alias. 

  • You may not forward email from a UTmail instructional account (business account) per UT policy.

To set up automatic forwarding from your UTmail account, you need to sign in to your UTmail Google Account and verify the forwarding in your personal Google Account.  

 

1. On your computer, go to Google Account Inbox and sign in with your UTmail account.  
 
 
 

2. In the top right, click the Settings icon Settings. 
 

3. Click See all settings. 
 
 
 

4. Click the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab. 
 
 
 

5. In the "Forwarding" section, click Add a forwarding address. 

 
 
 

6. Enter the personal email address you want to forward messages to, then click Next. (You may forward your personal UTmail email to a non-Gmail address.) 
 
 
 

7. Confirm your forwarding address, then click Proceed.

8. A verification message will be sent to that address. Click Ok.

9. Go to Google Account Inbox and sign in with your personal account.  
 

10. Open the UTmail Forwarding Confirmation email message from UTmail. Note: If you chose to forward to a non-Gmail address, you will need to log in to that account to view the confirmation email.  
 
You can either: 

  • Click the confirmation link in the email to return to your UTmail account settings.  

    or 

  • Copy the confirmation code in the email. 
    1. Go back to the settings page for your UTmail account and select the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab. 

    2. Enter the confirmation code from your personal email account and click Verify.

11. Returning to your UTmail account settings, under the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab, select the option for Forward a copy of incoming mail to your personal email account and choose what you want to happen with the Gmail copy of your emails.

You have the following options for what happens to the Gmail copy of your emails: 

a. Keep UTmail mail’s copy in the Inbox.  

b. Mark UTmail mail’s copy as read.

c. Archive UTmail mail’s copy.

d. Delete UTmail mail’s copy. RECOMMENDED: Select this option to avoid going over the 1 GB quota if you don’t routinely log in to your UTmail account to delete emails.  

 

 12. At the bottom of the page, click Save changes.

13. Note: Don’t forget to manage UTmail emails you received before you set up forwarding; you may have to delete messages to be under the 1 GB storage quota on your UTmail account. If you want to retain a copy of these messages, follow the instructions above to transfer files from your personal UTmail account to a personal Google account.

Exporting and Importing Your UTmail Google Calendar

This section is designed to provide you resources to transfer your personal UTmail calendar to your personal Google Account calendar.  

 

1. Export your UTmail Calendar 

You can export events from all your UTmail calendars, or just a single calendar.  

  • Visit Export your Google calendar for step-by-step instructions; the export creates a zip file that you can import into another Google Account. 

 

2. Import Your UTmail Calendar into Your Personal Google Account  

You can transfer your events from your UTmail account to your personal Google Account Calendar.

Exporting and Importing Your UTmail Google Contacts

This section is designed to help you transfer your personal UTmail Google Contacts to your personal Google Account contacts.  

 

1. Export Existing UTmail Google Contacts 

  1. Go to Google Contacts and sign in with your UTmail account.  
  2. At the left, click Export. 
  3. Select which contacts to export. 
  4. Select Google CSV. 
  5. Click Export. 
  6. At the top right, click your profile picture or profile initial > Sign out. 
 

2. Import UTmail Google Contacts into Your Personal Google Account 

  1. Go to Google Contacts, then sign in with your personal Google Account.
  2. At the left, click Import.
  3. Click Select File.
  4. Choose your file.
  5. Click Import.
