Q: I have been granted a license. What do I do next?

A: OSX - There is no client available. You can access Visio several ways. The waffle menu drop down will display a Visio icon. You can also go to https://visio.microsoft.com and sign in with your UT Office 365 account.

Versions

Desktop client: please contact your desktop support group to request the desktop installation. Continue reading to request the online subscription version.

There are three online versions of Visio. a free version, Vision Plan and Visio Plan 2. 

  • Visio is free with Microsoft365, offering minimal features to get you rolling

  • Visio Plan 1 is about $12 annually (web only)

  • Visio Plan 2 is about $24 annually (web and client)

Purchasing process

Step 2: Pay for it:

ITS: https://utdirect.utexas.edu/apps/services/requests/ 

Campus: your department billing contact


Step 3: Contact ITS to associate licenses to users. (Service Now)

Step 4: Billing - no action required. ITS will auto-renew and bill for the next year. (Service Now)

ITS will auto bill via your ten digit UT account number and billing contact.

The billing contact is the owner of all licenses

The billing contact can modify users and transfer licenses

Notes:

Technically, ITS is not involved until the licenses have been purchased and assigned to the tenant by Dell

Dell does not communicate their process to ITS

We rely on the customer to bring us the receipt

ITS will assign user licenses based on the Service Now request ticket

FAQ - Q&A

Q: I already have a copy of Visio Standard or Professional on my workstation. Purchased from the Campus Computer store. Can I use my copy to collaborate with online projects?

Q: I am a student, can I get a copy of Visio, or other paid subscription apps?

A: Anyone that has an Office 365 account can request premium($) apps, but a UT 10 digit account number is required, as well as a billing contact. The billing contact would responsible for the annual payments. Unfortunately for most students, an affiliation with a department is not common.


Q: I have a Mac.

A: Sorry, no client. But the web browser does a decent job. 


Q: I already have a copy of Visio Professional 2016 or 2019 locally installed on my machine. Do I need to uninstall it?

A: No. Consider them two separate applications.


Q: What is the difference between Visio Professional and Visio Online? 

A: Microsoft Visio Plan 2, available as a subscription. Visio Professional 2016/2019 is a client install. Cloud-only features as Data Visualizer, Database Reverse Engineering, Improved Support for the AutoCAD drawings have been recently introduced to Visio Online. Visio Plan 2 also allows each user to install Visio on up to five PCs running Windows. It automatically installs the latest updates (both feature and security) for the duration of the subscription. Visio Plan 1 with 2 GB OneDrive storage is also included.


Q: How does it get installed on my machine?

A: User must install it themselves by logging in with their official UT email here: https://portal.office.com/account/?ref=MeControl#installs and click on "Office apps & devices".


Q: How do I pay for this?

A: First time users or departments will start at Step 1 above. Price will be prorated based on months left from licensed date to October 31st. Once implemented, see below:


Q: How will I get billed?

A: After November 1 each year, your billing contact associated with your UT ten digit account number with be billed by ITS.

Q: How can a license be transferred to another user?

A: A license can be transferred to another user, as long as each are both under the same UT account number. The billing contact is able to do this via Service Now. Click on Transfer. Billing against the UT account number will not be billed extra. Each license is provisioned and billed to the account one single time, no matter how may times it is transferred from use to user.
