How do I create assignments in Canvas, and what are they for?

Assignments can be used to assess students’ understanding and competency. Each time a graded assignment is added to a course, a corresponding column is added to the gradebook.

Assignments with points are essential to the Canvas gradebook. You cannot create a column in your Canvas gradebook [Grades] without first creating an Assignment on the Assignments page. Likewise, Canvas grades students Total Points EARNED / Total Points POSSIBLE.

You can create assignments regardless of whether or not you will accept student work online. So even if you are having students turn in work on paper, you will still create an assignment on the Assignments page with a Submission Type = On Paper.

To create an assignment:

  • Select Assignments from within the course on the navigation bar.
  • Once in the Assignments menu, select the blue +Assignment button to create a new assignment.
  • Navigate through the assignment creation process to add the assignment that suits your needs.
