The following types of EIDs are available.

Person EIDs

Person EIDs represent people and are used to log on to various secure UT applications. Since 2002, these UT EIDs have been created using an individual’s initials and a sequence number, and can be changed in certain circumstances using the Change UT EID administrative process. Prior to 2002, individuals were allowed to choose their UT EIDs, although EIDs of more than eight characters were changed to match the 2002 format.

Business EIDs

Business EIDs are created for outside businesses who deal with the university. These EIDs are strictly identifiers and cannot be used to log in to any systems. Business UT EIDs begin with the number 2 and are followed by a random sequence of numbers and letters. These UT EIDs may not be changed.

Department EIDs

Department EIDs represent university departments, and these EIDs cannot be used to log on. Department UT EIDs begin with the number 3 and are followed by a unique department code value which is specified by the University Department System. These UT EIDs may not be changed.

Service EIDs

Service EIDs represent applications, machines, and systems that require an electronic identity for machine-to-machine authentication. Service EID logons can only occur programmatically. Service UT EIDs begin with the number 4 and are followed by a random sequence of numbers and letters. These UT EIDs may not be changed.

Resource EIDs

Resource EIDs represent assets owned by a department, such as UNIX accounts. Resource EID logons can only occur programmatically. Resource UT EIDs always begin with the number 6, followed by a random sequence of letters and numbers. These UT EIDs may not be changed.

Group EIDs

Group EIDs represent groups of identities, which can include any other EID type. These EIDs allow administrators to give EIDs that are members of the group certain authorizations. Group EIDs must be sponsored by a department. Group UT EIDs begin with the number 5 and are followed by a random sequence of numbers and letters. Group EIDs are only used to provide authorizations and cannot be used to log on, nor can group UT EIDs be changed.

ID-only EIDs

ID-only EIDs are placeholders that support university business processes. These EIDs cannot log on. ID-only UT EIDs begin with the number 0 and are followed by a random sequence of numbers and letters. The UT EID for an ID-Only EID may not be changed.
