Operating System Version Warnings

Customers are strongly encouraged to use only officially supported operating systems. Migration to a newly released OS is discouraged for the following reasons:

  1. Application compatibility - UT Austin authors many in-house applications and maintains internal systems that may not function properly with just released operating systems. Compatibility testing is mandatory. When adjustments to an application's code or a service are necessary it may take months for those changes to roll out in production.
  2. Security Exposure - Dangerous security flaws are sometimes present in newly released operating systems. Waiting for others to discover these issues and for the vendors to patch their software helps limit potential exposure of Category 1 data and its associated legal complications and expenses.
  3. Customer Support and Training - New operating systems have features or redesigned interfaces that no longer match support documentation. This delays our ability to provide high quality support and training for customers while new workflows, documentation and other processes are developed.

Supported Encryption Products

Windows

  • Bitlocker (recommended)
  • SecureDoc (sunset)

Macintosh

  • Filevault 2 (recommended)
  • Filevault (sunset)

  • Firefox
  • Internet Explorer
