Understanding VPN Connection Time Limitations

The following limits apply to all VPN sessions using the desktop client:

  • If your VPN session has been inactive for 2 hours, it automatically terminates. For a connection to be considered active, there must be data (other than timeout queries sent to the VPN server) moving back and forth on the VPN between your remote location and campus. Examples of data traveling the network include: using your desktop Outlook client to read email stored on a campus mail server, using a network resource or departmental services, printing on a campus printer, or accessing a service on campus that uses a TCP or UDP port that is blocked by the campus firewall. If your session terminates due to inactivity, you can reconnect.

  • Your connection automatically terminates after 24 hours of continuous connection time. Even if your connection has been active during this 24 hour period, it will self-terminate. If this happens, you can reconnect.

  • You can have only two VPN session open on a computer at a time. If you try to open a third session from the same computer, the third logon attempt will fail.
