Current students, faculty, staff, and official visitors have access to the utexas-iot (Internet of things) wireless network on campus.

To connect to utexas-iot, your device must support WPA2-PSK (aka. "WPA2 Personal" or "WPA2 Home"), and you must register your device with your UT EID.

From a network-connected device:

  1. Go to https://network.utexas.edu
  2. Log in with your UT EID (via UTLogin)
  3. Click the "Register Wireless Device" button
  4. Enter your device's MAC address and a description, and click the "Register" button.  NOTE: if your device randomizes its MAC you may have to configure it not to do so (see your device documentation).
  5. Select the appropriate profile. By default, the "Protected" profile will allow all outbound connections and block unsolicited inbound connection attempts to the device. The optional "Unprotected" profile will allow all inbound connections to the device. If selecting the "Unprotected" profile, ensure you take appropriate precautions to secure access to your device.
  6. The portal will provide a key, and you can always go back to the portal if you forget

On your IoT device:

  1. Select utexas-iot from the available wireless networks
  2. Enter the WPA2 key provided to you in step 5 above

Troubleshooting:

Security

utexas-iot is encrypted over the air with with a key shared between devices you configure.  In general, utexas should be used if a device will support both WPA2-Enterprise and WPA2-PSK, due to its stronger encryption.  utexas-iot may be used for devices that are difficult to configure or access (the keys remain the same even if EID passwords, which would impact WPA2-Enterprise devices), or older devices not compatible with utexas.

Applications that require publicly accessible IP addresses:

Due to the large number of devices on the wireless network, connected devices are not assigned publicly accessible IP addresses.
