Can a university employee receive an honorarium (e.g. payment for providing a speech)?
Yes, an employee, i.e. faculty or staff, of The University of Texas at Austin (UT) may be paid an "honorarium" by a department outside the department in which the employee is appointed, so long as the employee's supervisor approves the payment. An honorarium to a current employee, regardless of the department making the payment, must be reported as taxable wages in Workday, even if it a department believes the honorarium is not related to the employee's normal job duties with UT. Contact Payroll Services for further guidance processing honorariums to employees.
If the person being paid an honorarium is not an employee, the process is different, so for assistance with honorariums to non-employees contact tax.ic@austin.utexas.edu.
