1042-S Has a Blank Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)

I received a 1042-S with a blank Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). What should I do?

If you have a Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), self report this number in UT's secure Tax ID System and then email 1042S@austin.utexas.edu and notify UT (Tax Services) that you have updated your tax record. UT (Tax Services) will then update your Form 1042-S before it is sent to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and issue you a new copy with your SSN.

If you do not have a SSN, check eligibility with the Social Security Administration by reading Who can request a Social Security number and completing the necessary steps.

If you are not eligible for a SSN, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will issue you an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) upon applying on a Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number.  For additional information, see "Apply for an ITIN" at https://www.irs.gov/individuals/individual-taxpayer-identification-number.
